Superfood of the Week: Goji Berry

Goji berries, also known as wolfberries, are a superfood rich in vitamins and minerals. The medicinal history of this fruit dates back to ancient China, where it was used to heal various ailments.

Goji berries contain vitamin A, vitamin C, fiber, iron, zinc, and antioxidants. They also contain all eight essential amino acids. They are high in protein; just one serving (four ounces) provides nearly ten percent of your daily protein intake. Goji berries are also a complex carbohydrate; so your blood sugar will raise slowly, reducing your risk of a sugar crash after.

The health benefits of this superfood include, but are not limited to:

  • Boosted immune system
  • Weight loss aid
  • Antioxidants for skin and eyes
  • Maintaining blood sugar
  • Increasing testosterone

Goji berries often come in dried form, similar to raisins. They also have a sweet, slightly sour taste. You can incorporate them into your diet in several ways- add it to your yogurt or trail mix, drink it as a juice or a tea, or cook them with pork or turkey (adds a savory sweetness to a healthy dish).
