Jade rolling has recently grown in popularity in Western culture, yet the practice has been around since ancient Chinese medicine. Jade was used to draw out negative energy and balance one’s “chi.” It was also used on Chinese royalty to retain good spirits.
Besides the historical background of jade, there are several proven health benefits.
- Aids in lymphatic drainage. Having a puffy face in the morning is common and caused by extra fluid that collects around your eyes and cheeks. The lymphatic fluid flows out of your lymph nodes and needs to return back to your cardiovascular system, thus draining the area.
- Increases blood flow. Increased circulation in your face will give you a healthy flushed look. It can also have anti-aging properties, stress relief, give a well-rested appearance, and soothe skin inflammation/acne.
- Decrease under eye darkness. The cooling sensation of the jade roller can reduce the size of the underlying blood vessels.
- Assists with skincare absorption. Jade rolling helps your skin absorb serums and lotions much more quickly and efficiently.
- Massages and relaxes your face. Putting pressure on various points of your face can release tension. Therefore, it helps relax and loosen up your facial muscles.
A jade roller is an awesome tool that women (and men) can add to their skincare routine. It is very simple and easy to use. If you want to apply a serum or lotion to your face first you can.
- Then you start at the bottom of your face (center of your chin) and roll outward across your jaw and up toward your ear. You should follow the same pattern all the way to your cheek.
- Next move to your nose and roll outward over your cheek and towards your ear again.
- You can use the smaller stone end (if it is double sided) and work from the inner lower eyelid over the gentle under eye skin outward toward your temple.
- Lastly, place the roller between your eyebrows and roll out over each brow, next slightly above the area, and then straight up towards your hairline.
A jade roller isn’t a necessity in your skincare repertoire, but it can be a way to pamper your skin. One last thing: don’t forget to clean your jade roller! Your face does produce oil and gather dust, dirt, and other debris; you don’t want to end up spreading bacteria around on your face. Once a week is enough, but if you have sensitive skin or acne prone skin, it’s best to wash it down after each use.
A tip for all you jade rolling newbies: put your jade roller in the refrigerator so that it can be chilled before use. Thank me later.
