Superfood of the Week: Avocado

A superfood that has skyrocketed in popularity in recent years: AVOCADO! From avocado toast becoming a diet staple for many to an avocado bar popping up in NYC, it’s no surprise that it’s a current favorite.

Besides the fact that avocado is smooth and has a nice light flavor (and therefore can be added to nearly any dish), it has a plethora of health benefits. These benefits include, but are not limited to:

  • Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have proven benefits on cholesterol reduction and heart disease prevention.
  • Contains vitamin C and E, which help stimulate the immune system.
  • Vitamin E also helps keep skin and hair healthy.
  • Rich in calories, so they can give you a boost of energy.
  • Great source of fiber, which helps gut health.
  • Contains folic acid, which helps bones and muscles grow (great for children) and is also beneficial for pregnant women.
  • Contains vitamin D, which protects teeth and gums.
  • Good source of potassium, which helps maintain healthy muscles, as well as magnesium, which is related to a proper functioning nervous system.
  • Contains oleic acid, which is linked to reduced inflammation in the body.

If you’re looking to add avocado to your diet, it is great on toast, in salads, and added to smoothies. You can use it instead of butter when cooking and even make a face mask out of it. The possibilities are endless with this superfood!
