Even though green tea isn’t technically a food, it is still considered a superfood for its amazing health benefits.
If you need help waking up in the morning, green tea has a decent amount of caffeine (not as much as coffee though) and it won’t give you the jittery side effects of a caffeine overload.
Green tea is a great source of antioxidants called catechins. This antioxidant has been shown to slow the effects of free radicals on cancer cells, reduce the size of tumors, and may even cause cancer cells to die rather than spread and grow. So technically, green tea is a cancer fighter!
It is also calorie free, so you should have zero guilt drinking it. The combination of catechins and other antioxidants found in green tea can also help your body fight fat as well as burn more calories.
Also, the catechins in green tea have been linked to lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, two neurodegenerative diseases. The antioxidants found in green tea can have a very positive impact on your health!
The best way to enjoy the health benefits of green tea is to drink 2-3 cups a day. Loose leaf tea is preferable to tea bags because it is often a higher quality tea. Just add some honey and a slice of lemon and you’re good to go! BUT, if you just don’t enjoy the taste of green tea, the flavored green teas (peach, blueberry, lemon, etc.) are all great alternatives.
If you aren’t a tea drinker at all, there are other ways to incorporate green tea into your diet. Green tea comes in powder form, and can be used to make pancakes, muffins, smoothies, ice cream, and cheesecake!
